History Of The Debay Wine Cellar Vietnam
The French colonialists erected the Debay wine cellar in 1923. This is one of hundreds of projects invested by the French between 1919 and 1938 on the summit of Ba Na Mountain.
They constructed a network of villas, post offices, and hospitals to serve the requirements of high-ranking politicians, French military commanders, French merchants, and affluent Vietnamese pro-French. In addition, the purpose of the Debay wine cellar is to store premium wines imported from France.
Its name comes from the French captain who discovered Ba Na so that Governor-General Paul Doumer could develop a resort. Furthermore, since this is a fancy entertainment venue, the wonderful wines are only provided to the upper class on special occasions and at renowned events.
After the French colonists failed and left Vietnam in 1945, Debay Wine Cellar faded into obscurity. It wasn’t until later that this location was renovated and made operational again.
What Makes Debay Wine Cellar Unique?
Special Location
The wine cellar was erected inside Ba Na Mountain, 1,487 meters above sea level. Due to this, the weather is pleasant all year round, with temperatures ranging from 16 to 20 degrees Celsius, which is extremely cool.
Here, visitors will experience the climate of four seasons in one day, including heavy fog in the morning, sunny noon, cool afternoon, and cold night. Not only that, but you can admire the panoramic view of the mountains, sea, and miniature Da Nang city.
Furthermore, Debay has a depth of up to 100 meters in the core of the mountain, providing ample space to preserve wine in optimal circumstances. The flavors of the wines preserved here stay intact and rich over time.
Unique Architecture
Debay Wine Cellar remains Vietnam’s only wine cellar built on top of a mountain. The French created this place; hence, it has a strong French architectural character.
The wine cellar is 100 meters long, 2.5 meters high, and 2 meters wide. The interior is fully outfitted with a storage cellar, distilleries, bars, fireplaces, and lounges. In addition, the Debay vault’s walls were built using mountain stones and handmade cement made from molasses and natural tree resin.
In particular, the ceiling is designed in the shape of a dome, which provides excellent protection. Thanks to its structure, the wine cellar has maintained its total integrity during previous battles.
Currently, the Debay cellar includes 14 wine cells, 5 large cells, and 9 tiny cells. Each wine cellar is held by a home or hotel owner in Ba Na.
